Were you surprised to get CCPA emails during the summer? For the first time, SMU CCPA has summer Fellows, who have been busy writing blog posts, social media pushes, and takeovers and keeping you up on all things CCPA. Just because we aren’t together on campus hasn’t stopped us from connecting our CCPA students, alumni, and faculty. Today we will take you behind the scenes to meet our communication team.
Avery is a rising senior pursuing a triple major in Public Relations and Strategic Communication, Fashion Media and Journalism with a minor in Psychology. She grew up in Dallas, attended high school in south Florida, and then moved back to Dallas upon high school graduation to attend SMU. She is an SMU legacy, as her grandfather, mother, and brother all attended SMU, as well.
Additionally, Avery is Vice President of Programming for SMU’s Public Relations Student Society of America chapter. She is Membership Vice President of her sorority, Gamma Phi Beta (Alpha Xi), and sits on the executive board of SMU Hillel.
Currently, she works as an intern at Innovent, a creative brand engagement agency in Dallas. Her past work experience includes being the editorial intern at PaperCity Magazine – Dallas, being the social media marketing manager at Lute Riley Honda of Richardson, and being an event planning coordinator for a start-up agency in Dallas.
After graduating from SMU, Avery plans to remain in Dallas for a few years working in public relations. Then, she hopes to move abroad – to wherever the wind, and her career, take her.
In her free time, Avery enjoys playing with her two rescue kittens, Scarlet and Hartley, traveling, reading and doing pilates. She grew up being a competitive dancer and enjoys staying active.
Avery is thrilled to be an SMU CCPA Fellow this year. “I love being able to support the CCPA department while learning on the job and doing the work I love,” she said.
Welcome to the CCPA Fellows team, Avery.
Abigail (Abba) Yaney
Abba is a rising senior pursuing a double major in Public Relations and Strategic Communication and Psychology. She grew up outside of Boston and moved to Dallas to attend SMU and escape the snow. She often jokes that although she didn’t grow up in Texas, she got here as soon as possible.
This summer, she interned with the State Fair of Texas in their marketing department, working on social media. Previously she interned at Dala Communications, a public relations agency in Dallas.
Abba is the incoming president of the SMU chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA).
After graduating from SMU, Abba plans to stay in Dallas for a few years working in public relations. She dreams of going back to London and working there for a few years after enjoying her summer abroad.
When not on campus, Abba enjoys running, yoga, cooking, traveling, and trying all the new restaurants Dallas has to offer. She’s typically found drinking an iced coffee and studying at a new local coffee shop.
When asked about her experience as a Fellow so far, Abba said, “I have learned so much so far. I love being able to work for a department that has made my time at SMU so special.”
Welcome to the CCPA Fellows team Abba.
Many thanks to our summer Fellows for their hard work and dedication.
