SMU President Dr. Gerald Turner announced the plans for the August 15, 2020 graduation. Every 2020 graduate should have received the email from Dr. Turner. For your convenience, the letter is copied in this story.
July 7, 2020
Dear 2020 SMU Graduate: It is my honor and pleasure to invite you to a special August Commencement ceremony on the Hilltop, honoring your achievement as a 2020 graduate of SMU. As you know, our normal May festivities had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, we are thrilled to celebrate you and this historic event in a manner that adheres to appropriate safety and health guidelines.
We invite graduates and their guests to an outdoor ceremony in Ford Stadium on the morning of August 15, 2020, at 8 a.m. Both graduating students and the Platform Party will be seated on the football field, arranged to maintain a healthy social distance between individuals. Graduates will be individually recognized. Guests will be seated in the stands, with related groups asked to space themselves to support social distancing. Face coverings are required while inside Ford Stadium. Following Commencement, graduates who wish to participate in a self-guided, self-paced walk through the iconic Dallas Hall Rotunda will also have that opportunity.
More information on the events, tickets, regalia, security screening, health and safety measures and instructions for graduates and guests will be available here beginning July 20.
Please click here to indicate your attendance and that of your guests. Tickets are required for you and for up to four guests. They will be available to download as PDFs on August 5.
If you plan to attend the ceremony in person and did not get a chance to order regalia in the spring, you may order it online by Monday, July 13, or in person at the SMU bookstore beginning August 10. If you have already ordered regalia, you may update your address to have it shipped to your home.
For those unable to attend the ceremony in person, a live stream of the event will be offered.
In the event that conditions and guidelines change so as to make Commencement at Ford Stadium inadvisable, SMU will still have an on-campus opportunity for you to be recognized individually with your guests in attendance on August 15.
Should you have questions in the interim, feel free to reach out to Enrollment Services at 214-768-3417 or via email firstname.lastname@example.org.
After the interruptions of the spring semester, we are all looking forward to safely gathering with our students and their guests in an outdoor ceremony that carries all the pomp and circumstance SMU is known for. You deserve a big, Mustang finish. The entire SMU family is excited to welcome you and your guests to this historic event.Sincerely,
R. Gerald Turner
